Nicholas Hoult is the cover of AugustMan’s new issue (#146). The photoshoot used was taken by Rachell Smith.

NICHOLAS Hoult calls me right on the dot at 9pm, Singapore time. Stellar punctuality from a Hollywood star is something I never expected. And unlike many other celebrity interviews I’ve done, Hoult isn’t accompanied by his agent or minder. It’s just myself and his British accent.

The Young Veteran

Hoult tells me he had just wrapped up filming for The Great, a Hulu exclusive drama series that details Catherine the Great’s rise to power in the 1700s. In the movie, Hoult plays Catherine’s husband Peter, who was Emperor of Russia for six months before being overthrown by his wife. It’s not new territory for the British actor.

Prior to putting on a wig for Peter, Hoult had also played the statesman Robert Harley in the historical period comedy-drama film The Favourite. “I put on a wig for that one too, and it was surprisingly quite comfortable even though it was massive. The only problem was that it was full of hairspray and there were many candles on set; they wanted to light the movie naturally. So I was a bit of a walking fire hazard,” says Hoult, chuckling on the phone.

“I have a fairly manageable level of fame. But grappling with fame is something I had to learn. Someone once told me that you have to learn to be famous and that’s true. It feels unsettling to be walking out and about, and have people look at you with a formed impression even before they get to know you. It’s a bit like being an animal in a zoo.”

The Favourite, which is slated to come out in the local cinemas in February, has already won multiple awards – Grand Jury Prize and Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival, five Golden Globes nominations, top 10 films of 2018 by the American Film Institute, etc.

But Hoult has never been the sort to chase awards or to choose a role based on the probability of being on stage to deliver a heartfelt thank you speech. It’s an attitude that was wrought by close to two decades of being in the industry. Hoult was a child actor who made his screen debut at age seven in a film titled Intimate Relations.

“You can’t modify your experience you had on a film based on the end result,” says Hoult. In this case, the actor is referring to both awards and box office results. Hoult has starred in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. But, he has also starred in a couple of flops.

The Briton admits that it used to bother him. Not any more. “As an actor, you have to learn to deal with that. Acting is quite an odd game in the sense that there are waves. You catch a wave for a minute and everything goes well. But then, the wave stops and it feels like you’re back to square one. So, that’s something I’ve had to learn along the way.”

Nicholas Hoult is the cover of Style Magazine Italia’s new issue (January/February). The photoshoot used was taken by Michael Schwartz.

Nicholas Hoult is The Favourite. He’s also the hero of the cover of the January/February issue of Style. He provides a fresh new face with which to start 2019: the actor, who began his film career with Hugh Grant in About a Boy, isn’t yet 30 years old.

Sixty, on the other hand, is the number of years in the career of Flavio Lucchini, the creative founder of numerous fashion magazines. These 60 years are the subject of a conversation with Michele Ciavarella which, with the help of iconic photos and covers, sheds light on the (not always positive) evolution of society and language in Italy. Contemporary male fashion, particularly free “zero ties” formalwear, is the subject of a feature by fashion director Luca Roscini. It’s set in an amusement arcade and has the title “Las Vegas Show.”

Other, older, metropolises provide parallel entertainment in the new Style. In the Far East, a spectacular Tokyo is presented as a contemporary labyrinth, in the contrast between the great architectural and urban experiments and the randomness of its endless “non-places” and hidden corners. And in the West, Berlin is revisited, with the help of films, music and TV series, revealing its ability to reflect history from the start of the 20th century up to the present day.

And a Berliner by adoption, the 32-year-old German-Canadian actor Nolan Funk,is the star of our Menstyle section in which he gives his take on men’s fashion (which this year features trendy trench coats, utility ties, camouflage and a military look).

And another actor, Italy’s Alessio Lapice, helps close our fashion portfolio in style. He is also very much under 30. He’s young and dynamic, like this year’s first issue of Style, which is on sale with the Corriere della Sera on Wednesday January 9th.

Nicholas Hoult is the cover of Esquire Singapore’s new issue (november). The photoshoot used was taken by Michael Schwartz.

Nicholas Hoult doesn’t have much time.

In a lofty downtown Manhattan studio on a grim, leaden Saturday, we’ve been photographing him for over six hours, and he’s got a flight to catch. Yet even as the clock runs out, he’s a consummate professional. Hoult cycles through a carousel of outfits with a natural ease, even when we come to a thick, tartan suit patterned with funky appliquéd squirrels—a suit that would send a lesser man running for the hills. After we’ve wrapped, he makes the rounds saying goodbye to the entire crew with a graciousness and gratitude uncharacteristic of actors with his star wattage. He’s shaking hands, he’s slapping backs, and although his time is tight, he’s hesitant to leave until he’s connected with everyone. When we settle into a pair of armchairs to chat, there’s a boarding pass burning a hole in Hoult’s pocket, yet still he has a miraculous way of making you feel as if you’re the only thing on his agenda.

At just 28 years old, British-born Hoult has built a fruitful career on defying expectations, pinballing from big-budget blockbusters to indie romances to pedigreed biopics and back again. His appetite for newness is voracious, but as he stares down the next decade of his life, both professionally and personally, Hoult is ruminating on the path he’s walked thus far, looking ahead to new frontiers and reflecting on his craft.

20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix has had some mystery around it since being announced, but now fans finally have some new footage thanks to the official trailer that debuted during The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
